Si funciona, Google SEO es usado por todos los foros y es compatible con 1.8.x a lo sumo tenes que cambiar la compatibilidad en el plugin (pero creo que ya viene cambiado si lo bajas de GitHub), pero bueno es 100% compatible.
Este es MyBB Google SEO según veo ya esta modificado para que sea compatible con 1.8.x, si tenes dudas como instalar o demás fijate en el buscador que hay varios tutoriales en el foro, o bien consulta nuevamente, aunque su instalación es simple como cualquier otro plugin
Seria mas claro que dejes un detalle del supuesto error que daño tu foro, en todo caso el .htaccess no daña el foro, solo que si esta mal configurado no te va a dirigir correctamente, es tan simple como cambiarle el nombre para volver atrás o borrar el archivo, en todo caso deja mas información de que hiciste y si te da un error indica cual.

De memoria no recuerdo que tiene que decir el htacces, pero es simple, a tu ACP podes entrar?, si es así fijate en configuración-->Plugins donde esta Google SEO te tiene que mostrar en que estado esta o si falta aplicar algo, si esta OK te dice pero igual no anda, anda a tu FTP y edita el archivo .htacces cambiale el nombre a htaccess.txt por ejemplo, con eso ya tendrías que poder entrar a tu foro sin problemas, una vez que haces esto, ahora si entras a tu ACP--Configuración--Plugins y fijate que en el plugin te va a pedir aplicar cambios a tus archivos, le das OK te fijas que funcione y cualquier cosa pregunta nuevamente.
